This week has been all about...

:: lots of jam making. I've made up 6 kg of nectartine jam in four days to ensure the cheeky parrots don't eat them all.

:: planning my daugther's return to school (uniforms, sticking name labels on stationary, and contemplating how her school lunches can be healthier).

:: thinking about what to do with Miss 5 on her last day before school (ideas include going to Lunar Park or the museum??).

::organising a reward chart to go on our fridge . Am thinking school starting will be a good time to set down some new rules (Miss 5's keen so far). New rules around TV watching, the use of our new Ipad, her chores (feeding the dogs), piano practice and doing her school work (which really only involves doing her reader every night as she is still only a grade oner!).

::buying some Stylecraft yarn from Deramores (with a nice 15% off). I've been wanting to embark on a new crochet blanket so I indulged myselft and bought the style pack that matches Lucy's Attic24 Granny Stripe Blanket. I sooo love online yarn shops.

::progressing on my Patchwork bag. I've joined the squares together and done the handles.

I'm stuck though on which fabric to use to line the bag. I have some vintage sheets that would be perfect, though I'm not sure I'm ready to get the scissors out and start cutting them! I'm sort of tempted to go with the pink and purple fabric (it's a light cordoroy) as no vintage sheet would then need to be cut! But the yellow floral fabric looks lovely too, as well has the pink on the right. My favourite is the green on the left....but its a double bed size and I'd really like to keep it intact.

Do you have a favourite? I'd love to get some advice on this as am seriously stuck.

My patchwork bag has been coming along slowly. The postie delivered the scrumptious yarn (Rowan Belle Organic DK) in late September, and I have only just finished crocheting the 27 granny squares. I've been away from blogging for a while but have been busy with work, family, life ... and illness. It has been a busy time for me, and only now do I feel like I'm able to recharge.

I've made the very sensible decision to take some extended annual leave to recharge my batteries, spend some quality time with my daughter while she's on school holidays and spend some time pottering around my house doing fun stuff like cooking, preserving and making. I've also started reading again.

I've started crocheting the patchwork bag squares together, then onto the handle and making up the lining. I think I will use some of the vintage fabric I have been collecting. Ravelled here.

Ive also been working on covered clothes hangers from The
Gentle Art of Knitting by Jane Brocket, another project on my list. An easy and portable project.

Here is my list for A 2nd Year of Projects. The list is part of Come-Blog-a-long, a ravelry group where we
commit to our projects and share our progress (or lack of!) and challenges.

I am well now and am keeping myself busy with everyday life....family, friends and work. And of course a lot of crafting.

I've found crochet and knitting to be a wonderful healer...keeps me occupied while waiting for my appointments and keeps my hands busy and my mind free.

Having a project on the go is also a great conversation starter....

I have continued to keep up with all the exploits of my favourite bloggers and am keen now to join them in blog land again.

The pics here are some of the projects I've done over the last few months.

My Flowers in the Snow pillow...ravelled here, and the footstool cover is ravelled here.
I've been wanting to knit a cowl for a while - and our cold winter makes it perfect to wear.

It involved some new knitting techniques for me - a provisional cast on and a picot cast off. I loved doing this project (especially using the lovely cashmerino yarn) - and it's divine to wear. Think I might knit one or two up for a christmas gift.
And this is my progress on my intarsia strawberry. All I need to do is add a few black seeds. Then I'll have to make it into something practical...it measures 10cm by 18 cm. A glasses case? Or a little purse?

My initial thoughts are to knit another strawberry the same size and make them into a glasses case. But can't quite figure out what to do with the opening. Do I just leave it like a pocket, or thread some ribbon through it like a drawstring? What do you think?

Cheerio. Lori.

A while back I completed one of my projects - in my Year of Projects list. Thought I better post about it before I forget! The list is part of Come-Blog-a-long, a ravelry group where we commit to our projects and share our progress (or lack of) and
challenges.

The project was Floral Curtain Tiebacks from Cute
and Easy Crochet by Nicki Trench. I chose this project from my list first as its quick and easy and made me FINALLY put up the curtains in my daughter's room (it's been a year since I painted her room and purchased the curtains...me bad). The curtains look lovely (a Spotlight purchase) and the tiebacks cute as. Ravelled here.

I'm already planning my next project on my list - and have made a very exciting yarn purchase. I've ended up purchasing the yarn online from Deramores as it would seem no Australian yarn shops stock the range of colours I need. It's a British yarn so not surprising.

I'm hoping my yarn package arrives soon...as would be nice to have a new project and new yarn to keep me occupied over the next few weeks. I've been diagnosed with an illness that will require surgery and 4 weeks off work. So I plan to knit and crochet to my hearts content while recuperating on my couch at home.

I've been keeping myself busy (while waiting for my new yarn) by trying something new - a bit of Intarsia. Have you ever tried it? It's highly addictive. This book has been very helpful in teaching me how.
My progress on my one a day project has been slow. This is partly due to being busy doing other life stuff, and also cause I've been doing other crochet projects.

To get a bit of motivtion, I've pulled out a pillow fill I had in my cupboard, that is a perfect size for my african flower pillow. I've pinned it on, and am slowly joining up african flowers.

I've propped it up on my piano so you can see my progress so far....

I never got the opportunity to knit any baby booties for my daughter - my knitting skills were not much then (but I did knit her a baby bonnet that was so small it would only fit a dolls head...)

Crea in the City put me onto this lovely bootie pattern that uses easy peasy garter stitch. While my tendency to not read patterns properly got me in a bit of trouble this time, it is an easy pattern.

This is a gift for my daughter's piano teacher - who had her baby about 4 weeks ago.

Ravelled here. I should mention there is a slight error in the pattern instructions - for the sole - 1st row should end with K3 (not K4) and the 5th row should end with K1 (not K2).Lorihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12438102521474117655noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5059028342977537253.post-2041339300638665452012-07-13T18:02:00.001+10:002012-07-13T18:02:29.236+10:00Year of projects blog a long....

I've always been a bit of a list writer, and the thought of having a list of knitting and crochet projects I want to finish this year really appeals to me.

I'm joining in with the Come-Blog-a-long ravelry group - where we commit to our projects and share our progress (or lack of) and challenges. I've decided to compile a list mainly from my knitting/crochet books, and supplemented by some of the projects in my ravelry queue. I have sooo make crochet and knitting books that it's about time I used them.

So here we go....

Covered clothes hangers from The Gentle Art of Knitting by Jane Brocket

Why? I'd love to have them in my wardrobe and use up scraps of yarn. And I've yet to knit any of the lovely projects in this book.

Why? When I bought this book 6 months ago this was my favourite in the book. The thought of carrying around a bag like this fills me with awesomeness.

Why? Quick and easy, and a must for my daughters curtains that are waiting to be put up!

Metallic Tunic Top from Plus Size Crochet by Margaret Hubert.

Why? This is the only one in the book that I like, most of the others are not quite my style. And its about time I crocheted something wearable other than a scarf.

Why? It uses 2ply /lace yarn which would be a first to knit for me, and I'm almost finished knitting my first jumper/sweater for myself, and this would be a perfect next project. And I love wrap knits.
Why? I want to knit a new jumper for my daughter every year and this one has a nice chunky yarn.
That's 8 projects in total...5 from books and 2 from Ravelry. I've tried to keep my list reasonable, with a bit of room to do other stuff that grabs my crafty imagination.

Now I just need to decide which project to start first. Maybe the floral tie backs - this may get me moving on putting up the new curtains in my daughter's room. Do you have a favourite?Lorihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12438102521474117655noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5059028342977537253.post-43165210640129920942012-07-09T21:50:00.000+10:002012-07-13T19:49:21.285+10:00School holiday highlights

School holidays have been all about new experiences for my little one.

We had a day trip to Lake Mountain - the closest snow resort to Melbourne, where we could happily ride our toboggans, have snowball fights and build a snowman. Her first visit to the snow.

The area was burnt out by bushfires only two years ago, the damage still evident in the tree scape. The trees in the resort area are a type of eucalypt that re-grows from their bases, so the burnt trunks stay bare of any leaves.

We had a lovely picnic in the snow with wares from the most fantastic french cheese shop in Healesville. Sooo much better than the greasy junk food available at the resort cafe.

The weekend was finished with some Pho Bo from Footscray and some kiddie yarn craft. The yarn weaving is now swinging in the breeze, providing a bit of colour in my vegie garden. I got the idea of this project from Linda at Natural Suburbia. I've made these things many times as a child, but it has been over 20 years since I last did one! It was nice being reminded how. God's Eye is one name for them, do you know of any others?

Cheerio...am currently watching Pride and Prejudice with Laurence Olivier and Greer Garson and will now get back to it, it's quite a fun version.Lorihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12438102521474117655noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5059028342977537253.post-4475327856920476382012-07-04T00:29:00.000+10:002012-07-04T00:33:58.590+10:00Right now

Right now I'm...

:: loving being on leave from work for school holidays

:: planning activities and adventures with my daughter (think rollerskating, circus workshop and craft)

:: missing chocolate and sweet tea (as I'm challenging myself to eat no sugar in July)

:: watching Whip It for the first time, an awesome chick flick

:: flagging patterns in my many knitting and crochet books for A 2nd Year of Projects

:: packing snow clothes for our day trip to the snow (and little one's first EVER snow experience), think snowmen making, snowball fights and tobogganing.

:: mapping out my planned jaunt to Bendigo, to include op-shopping and a visit to Bendigo Woollen Mills factory...and some serious yarn buying

:: joining up my 43 african flowers into a pillow like this

What are you doing right now?

My week of visiting op shops was not too fortuitous, but I did find some lovely johnson cups and saucers. I'm loving the orange saucers especially. My collection has really reached a point where I'm going to have to show some discretion about what I grab. A hard ask as I find it very hard to leave behind any johnson crockery, especially the beautiful retro ones. I do have the excuse that I'm on the look out for johnson plates for an instagram friend so am grabbing some stuff for her too.

My weekend has been busy with the usual stuff - housecleaning, kiddie games and a bit of dog walking. As well as the usual crafting. I've continued to do my one-a-day crochet project of african hexagon flowers.

Today I pulled out one of my vintage embroidery kits and stiched away while snuggled on the couch watching this movie.
I found this on ebay quite a while ago (there's plenty more of these type of kits on ebay now if you're on the lookout for one).

What about you...did you spend your weekend out of the rain and cold? What sort of things kept you busy? Or maybe you has some lovely sunshine enticing you outdoors.
37 hexagons done, maybe around 15 more to go. The challenge will be joining them all into a square pillow shape. I've sort of worked out in my head how to go about it, hopefully it's as easy as I think it will be!

I first posted about this vintage embroidery kit I bought on Ebay back in August and I've finally finished the last little puff flower. The orange is as bright and orangey colour (garishly retro?!) as it looks in this photo. It's quite small, and was mostly done in a couple of weeks. But I sort of forgot about it for a while and it sat unloved in my sewing basket.

It's now sitting on my bookcase, between The Godfather and Groundhog Day.

It can happily sit there until I find a permanent home on a wall somewhere. I've got a nice little pile of other vintage crewel kits to work on ... stuffed away in a drawer. I'm off to investigate and select one. Fun fun.Lorihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12438102521474117655noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5059028342977537253.post-19400542143778744242012-06-24T20:39:00.001+10:002012-06-24T20:40:22.583+10:00Vintage findsMy weekend has been so much fun. With no uni studies to occupy my time, I have felt very spoilt and free. This was compounded by my five year old going off to see the football with her grandma, and hubby going off to do his footy umpiring, leaving me HOME ALONE for most of Saturday. I cannot remember the last time this happened. I pulled out the sewing machine and set myself up on the kitchen table and had some great fun with vintage fabric and ric rac. This is what I'm working on.

I could just image it re-crafted with a vintage patchwork cover, or maybe with a crocheted granny squares cover. But I resisted the temptation. I didn't get it, to the great relief of hubby.

I'm going to play along with the One-A-Day meme at Gingerbread Girl. I'm so pleased Carole is back hosting this linkup, as I've really missed it. I've missed having something to give me a bit of focus and motivation, and I've missed catching up with all the lovely bloggers on their one-a-day projects.

The idea of one-a-day is to do one piece of the project each day - so that by the end of the week you will have seven componants done - 7 granny squares or 7 stripes. I've gone through my craft basket and pulled out an unfinished project - one of my previous one-a-day projects that was never finished. Ravelry very unkindly remined me that I started it in April 2011 - which is a bit tragic!

I've been feeling stretched and squeezed by all my committments - family, work and my uni study - and have felt unable to do as much crafting as I would like. But that's now changing...at least for a few months. Yesterday involved doing my last exam for the semester, and a quick trip to my favourite yarn shop (Morris & Sons). I can now embark on a new project, clear of any study guilt (or not studying guilt!).

I deserved a little treat, and bought two balls of Debbie Bliss Baby Cashmerio yarn and some new circular knitting needles. The yarn is the most scrumptious thing - so soft, and knits beautifully. It's just unfortunate that it's so pricey.

My new project is from Molliemakes, a cowl pattern by Quince and Co.

I've been quite happy knitting away with lovely yarn and lovely needles.

I've also been planning my next sewing project. I've been sooo wanting to do a project with my slowly growing stash of vintage fabrics.

And my new lap top is really needing its own little home. A little tote bag. I'm still tossing up about which fabric to go with - and whether to make the whole thing with vintage retro colours, or have a neutral colour with only parts of it with the vintage fabric.

The tote bag is from this book...

It has some cute projects - none of which I've done yet. It is one of the many craft books that I have that give me inspiration, but I don't actually make anything from them! Well, for this little book, that's about to change.

What about you - do you have craft books sitting on your shelves unused?Lorihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12438102521474117655noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5059028342977537253.post-60388661956512449722012-06-10T20:36:00.001+10:002012-06-10T20:36:30.204+10:00Op shopping buzzThere is something about hunting in op-shops that gives me a buzz. And I've been getting that buzz a lot lately.

What I love about op-shopping...that heart stopping feeling when I spot an object I've been looking for, getting to share with my fellow instagrammers my lucky find, or showing my daughter a vintage object from my childhood that evokes lovely memories. My latest passion is for Johnson crockery, retro linen or vintage embroidery kits. And for vintage board games.

My finds this week include some gorgeous salt and pepper shakers,
My speed is improving, and my knowledge of techniques is growing (I've found google to be of great assistance here).

My favourite knitting projects are those by Claire Montgomery, and I've now finished two projects from her book Easy Kids Knits.

Winter has called for some serious scarf knitting. First scarf to be done is for my daughter...

A very simple scarf - just garter stitch with some crochet edging to hold the pockets together. Bendigo Woolen Mills yarn - 12ply. Raveled here. The maroon colour (not my normal colour choice!) is to match her school colours so she can happily wear it at school. And I love the orange contrast colour edging. It's nice and stretchy and wraps quite happily around her neck. She's been very diligent about taking it to and from school. Melbourne weather has gone very very cold, so a warm, loved scarf is timely.

My other project - a v-neck sweater - is also from Easy Kids Knits. It's my first ever knitted sweater - and the first time I've joined together knitted pieces. Its a 'boys' sweater, but I've just made it purple.

I used moda vera 8ply wool. It's very warm, but a bit scratchy. So I don't think I'll use this wool for clothing again. Raveled here.

My next quick knit project is a scarf for Hubby - another simple garter stitch scarf with Bendigo Woollen Mills yarn.

Are you crafting up any winter type clothes? Or maybe you have warmer weather coming? Lucky duck!

Cheerio.

Today being Anzac Day, I baked some Anzac biscuits. This recipe is from my mother-in-law.

Anzac Biscuit recipe

1 cup each of rolled oats, shredded coconut, sugar, and plain flour.

125g of butter

1 tablespoon of golden syrup

1 teaspoon of bi-carb soda

2-3 tablespoons of water

Melt the butter, golden syrup, bi-carb soda and 1 tablespoon of water on the stove. Put the other ingredients, excluding the water, in a large bowl. Mix butter mixture with the dry ingredients, and add the rest of the water. Add more if required to get it to stick together. Take about a tablespoon amount of the mixture, and press into a ball, place on a greased tray, and flatten into a biscuit shape. My mother in law uses the back of a spoon to do this, I find it easier to just use my fingers. Bake in a 180 degree oven for 15 minutes. Once out of the oven, let them sit on the tray for only a minute, then lay them onto baking paper on a cooling rack. Now if you're the sort who like your Anzacs chewy, then bake for less time.

I'm a fan of chewy Anzacs - but ended up baking them hard. What sort are are?

Last week, my daughter celebrated her fifth birthday, along with 9 other girls and 1 boy from her class. She described it as the BEST birthday ever....which made me feel pretty proud. I did everything possible to make it the best (like staying up till 1am the night before so the cake was just right!). By the end of the day the adrenalin stopped pumping and I crashed with exhaustion.

A kiddie birthday party was a wonderful excuse for me to finally do
some of those crafty projects I've been dieing to do....with bunting
being at the TOP of the list.

So, my crafting began with some bunting. I got my inspiration for the bunting from this tutorial. The best tip in the tutorial was to use fabric sash (the tutorial calls it twill?) to string the bunting flags together. It made it much easier and neater.

The birthday cake came from the Australian Women's Weekly Children's Birthday Cake Book - which was first published in 1980 and recently re-released.

When my daughter and I flipped through the pages together she chose a Dolly Vardin cake. I was pretty excited by this choice as one must bake a Dolly Vardin cake once in your life...surely. We had a lovely day trip to Melbourne to a specialist cake decorating shop. They had cake stuff piled up wall to wall. It was absolute heaven to be there.

While it may look like a complex cake to make, it was very, very easy. I used a packet cake mix, some lovely Vienna cream icing (pink of course) and some edible glitter. And the doll is dressed in Barbie's air steward jacket - giving her a bit of a glamorous appeal.

The party was great fun...an easter egg hunt, pony rides, a craft activity of making Easter bunny ears, face painting (by an auntie), as well as the usual kiddie games of pass the parcel and sit-down-Sunday. My husband joked that all we needed was a clown and it would have rivalled a small country fair! Oh well. In my family we do these crazy, over the top kiddie birthday parties once every three or four years, so I won't need to do another for a while yet.

The food included fairy bread, cocktail franks with sauce, little cupcakes and sandwiches.

My main focus has been preparing and helping my 4 year old go to school. I really wanted to focus all my energies on her first few weeks of school - the school uniform, the haircut, the new white socks, new school books and stationary, the school bag, the healthy lunch box and tinkerbell drink bottle, the art smock made from dad's old work shirt.

It's been a real adjustment for my hubby and I - rearranging our work schedules to fit around her school times - with my hubby and I dropping her off on different days, grandma picking her up on some days, after school care, before school care, change of work hours...phew!

My daughter is loving school, and loving the days she goes to afterschool care. It makes me very happy and quite pleased with myself that everything I am doing to help her make the transition to school is working. It helps too that her school and prep teacher are just fantastic.

Meanwhile I have still been busy on the crafting front.

My granny blanket has made some progress, and I've now started joining them together, using the join as you go method. My plan is to make this granny blanket for my bed.

I'm still unsure about the whole blocking thing. The previous blankets I've made did not really need it - one was acrylic yarn, and the other was made with this same Vera Moda 8ply yarn.

I really need to investigate options for blocking. My idea is to get a large cork board and block large squares of these as I join them together. In the past I've used a towel or a piece of cardboard, but this time I really need something a bit more user friendly.

Have you used a cork board before?
Or do you use something else... foam mats, or just a towel?

The pattern for these grannies is from here and I've ravelled here.

Some lovely bloggers have recently given me an award, which I'm pretty chuffed about. I'm still a newbie to the whole blogging thing and I'm loving being connected to other crafty ladies around the world. So thank you for the award! I'll be back with more on the award once I've settled back into my blogging.
I've done 12 in the last fortnight and I'm liking how the new colours -
navy blue, hot pink, mauve, dark grey - are looking. I'm trying to use
each coloured ball of yarn equally, but am sure my favourites are coming
through.

I carefully stack them up every night to ensure I have some sort of colour balance.
Good fruit is a result of good conditions at the time of flowering - which is during our late winter/early spring.

I was determined to have a go at some jam making this year and put all this fruit to good use. I sneakily bought the Country Women's Association Preserves cookbook whilst Christmas shopping last year - as it contains every possible jam, relish, chutney you could ever think of. Unfortunately their apricot jam recipe was not very successful for me - too much water and it did not setting properly.

But the nectarine jam came out delicious.

I slightly changed the recipe - by using equal weight of sugar to nectarines, as I have successfully done in previous years for raspberry jam. I also used less vanilla.

The recipe goes like this...

Put 2kg of peeled and sliced nectarines with 37g pectin. Bring to the boil over high heat. Add 2kg white sugar. Stir constantly during the whole process. Heat to a rolling boil for one minute, then take off the heat. Stir and skim for 5 minutes. Stir in 2 tsp of vanilla. Ladle into sterilised jars.

It's my first time using pectin, and I loved it! There is nothing more disappointing that going to all the hard work of preparing the fruit, boiling the jam, preserving the jars - and then for one's jam NOT to set. So disappointing. So am very happy to used pectin again - as a fail safe method.

Have you done any jam making this year?Lorihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12438102521474117655noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5059028342977537253.post-62635622454973415812012-01-29T10:44:00.002+11:002012-01-29T10:44:35.748+11:00The Endless SummerWith only a couple more days left of January 2012, I'm pretty happy with how much stuff I've squeezed into it. My daughter starts her first day of school in a week (both her and I are very very excited!), as a result I've been very keen to really treasure my time with her.

We've been going to Ocean Grove beach, so she can try out the new boogie board Santa brought her. I must confess I felt a guilty sort of pleasure when she got 'dumped' by this tiny little wave. It's a bit of a right of passage to be tossed and turned by waves - I was proud that she got up and wanted to keep on riding more waves.

On the crafting front, I really want to finish a knitting project - a kiddies jumper - from this book. I've banned myself from starting any new knitting projects until this is finished. Is this something you do too?

As a new knitting book arrived two days ago in the post (and it is absolutely scrumptious) there is now a new urgency to finishing this jumper. I'm planning on showing you some of my new book - more on that later....

Last night I blocked out the jumper. I was a bit unsure of how to do this - but after some research from the yarn label/books/blogland - decided on pinning it out, placing a damp tea towel on top, and gently steam ironing it. This seems to have worked well.

Next step is stitching it all together, and knitting the neckline. Almost, almost finished.Lorihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12438102521474117655noreply@blogger.com1
